The 2025 winners are Rylie Vann of University of Mary Washington (Honors Scholar of the Year) and Daphne Bobb of University of Mary Washington (Emerging Scholar of the Year). The VCHC is grateful to have Rylie Vann and Daphne Bobb studying in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the contributions they have made to the community around them. The selection committee judged their personal essays exceptional, and letters of support superior in their detailed account of academic and co-curricular accomplishments.
Rylie Vann is a senior at the University of Mary Washington majoring in Theatre and Communications and Digital Studies. Within the Theatre Department, she works as a Scene Shop Associate focusing primarily on theatrical lighting design and technologies. Rylie's time in Communications is spent researching reality television and the ways that it can interact with our lives. Elsewhere on campus, she works as a mentor for incoming students and a DJ on the campus radio station!
Daphne Bobb is nearing completion of her first year at the University of Mary Washington, Daphne is a Data Science student, dedicated to making the most of the resources offered by the Honors Program. Daphne aims to expand the reach of the Honors Program by involving students all over campus to make a difference both on campus and in our surrounding community of Fredericksburg. Some of her favorite volunteering opportunities are gardening with Fredericksburg Downtown Greens, Rappahannock River clean-ups, and tabling with Planned Parenthood. Within her first year, Daphne has taken on the role of Teacher’s Assistant in a course in her department, attended the Capital Area Women in Computing Conference, and presented at the UMW Women’s, Sexuality, and Gender Studies Research Forum. In her free time, Daphne is a dedicated musician, having spent over a decade cultivating her skills in classical and jazz guitar. In her first year, Daphne has completed private guitar lessons in the music department for her enjoyment as well as joining two guitar ensembles, performing on campus periodically. Daphne lives by the value that success truly lies in service to others. She strives to maintain her goal of academic achievement while keeping public service at the forefront of her priorities.
